In 2020 we're taking our Children's Lantern Competition nationwide! This competition is a community project and free for children around the country to participate in, thanks to our generous sponsors. In November we visited primary schools in the Wellington region to run lantern-making workshops as part of the competition.

In December teachers around the country will be running their own workshops, participating schools have been provided with all of the supplies they'll need to make the lanterns. We've made some easy step-by-step video tutorials for creating the lanterns, which you can watch here. By the end of 2019, 9,000 handmade lanterns will have been created across New Zealand as part of the competition.

All of these lanterns will be uploaded to our website so people can vote for their favourite. Over 3,000 of them will be displayed on the Wellington Waterfront at the Wellington Lantern Festival in February! Voting opens on the 20th of December and everyone that votes goes in the draw to win a year's supply of RJ's Licorice, which they have generously donated.

The three children whose lanterns receive the highest number of votes will be brought to Wellington in February, courtesy of Great Journeys of New Zealand, for the official prizegiving at the Wellington Lantern Festival. The winner of the National Children’s Lantern Competition will receive a return trip for two to Taiwan, courtesy of Air New Zealand, as well as $1,000 towards the winner's school’s art fund. The Wellington Lantern Festival aims to create a fantastic public art experience that's completely unique to our city. As part of this, we made the decision to take our Children's Lantern Competition nationwide.

The brand new National Children's Lantern Competition has already generated an unprecedented amount of public participation compared to previous years. We're passionate about inspiring the creativity of New Zealand's youngest, so it has been incredible to have so many children involved! We can't wait to display 5,000 of these beautiful children's lanterns for Wellingtonians and visitors alike at the Wellington Lantern Festival 2020.

We'd like to thank our generous sponsors for their support and all of the participating schools for getting involved!

School Workshops

In November we held 90 lantern-making workshops at more than 20 schools across the Wellington region. In the workshops our tutors taught children about the history of the lantern festival and helped them to create their very own lanterns. For schools outside of Wellington, we've sent them all of the lantern-making materials as well as some tutorial videos that you can see here. We provided the materials for making the lanterns and Resene generously provided all of the paints to participating schools nationwide! We'll be receiving photos of the lanterns from around New Zealand throughout December.

Children's Lantern Display

Competition entries from children in the Wellington region will be on display at the Wellington Lantern Festival on the 14th & 15th of February 2020. We hope to display children’s lanterns from all over New Zealand at future festivals.
